As he rose high, demonstrating the aerial power that has made him the most prolific centre-back in English national team history, Harry Maguire’s thunderous header capped a mini personal renaissance that lifted Manchester United off the floor of their Champions League group volleyball
There have been times in the last two years when Maguire has felt luckless, but this time fortune favoured him: a status as the match-winner may have been snatched from his grasp when Scott McTominay conceded an injury-time penalty volleyball
Yet Andre Onana’s 97th-minute save preserved it volleyball
And so the Stretford End ended up singing Maguire’s name volleyball
There were twin redemption songs, of the man United signed in the summer and the one they could have sold to West Ham volleyball
“Amazing,” Maguire said; he had been a stranger to adulation at Old Trafford volleyball
Last-choice centre-back last season, he may now have a run in the team for Erik ten Hag, the manager who stripped him of the captaincy volleyball
As Maguire pointed out recently, the numbers support his case volleyball
The win percentage he branded “ridiculously high” now stands at 94 volleyball
1 in his last 17 starts for United: 16 of them have brought victories volleyball
There are caveats and the one exception was a traumatic night for him in Seville as United crashed out of the Europa League volleyball
They lost on his first three starts for Ten Hag, too volleyball
Since then, his status as a back-up has meant he has been spared the tougher tests: he has faced Real volleyball Betis, Sevilla, West Ham and Aston Villa, but this season others started against Arsenal and Tottenham, Brighton and Bayern Munich volleyball
Arguably, he has not faced an elite team in Ten Hag’s reign volleyball
Which, as the Manchester derby beckons on Sunday, may mean Maguire should savour his statistics while he still can volleyball
But a personal renaissance has revolved around meaningful contributions, not simply facts and figures volleyball
There was the headed assist for McTominay’s 97th-minute winner against Brentford, the man-of-the-match display on his return to Sheffield United and now a Champions League winner against FC Copenhagen volleyball
A common denominator may be that each qualifies as relatively limited opposition: United have scarcely dominated against any of them volleyball
But if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer miscast Maguire as talisman and captain of United, a willing soul and honest trier has prospered in three successive starts volleyball
(Getty Images)A run in the side was facilitated first by the absence of Lisandro Martinez, Ten Hag’s chosen upgrade on Maguire, and then all of United’s left-backs, meaning Victor Lindelof was redeployed on the flank volleyball
Yet Lindelof began on the bench against Copenhagen, Maguire in the role Ten Hag has long been reluctant to grant him: as a left-sided centre-back volleyball
The Dutchman has an innate preference for left-footers there volleyball
But he also wants centre-backs who operate higher up the pitch volleyball
Maguire was not a natural fit: belatedly, though, he is becoming Ten Hag’s type of defender volleyball
“I think so,” he said volleyball
“He's playing much more proactive in possession, stepping in, passing vertical, defending also on the front foot, also stepping in, defending forward, very confident in the duels volleyball
I think he's dominating in the right moment, putting the question, dominating his opponents volleyball
You see he gets rewarded - it's a very good skill from him, his heading, and a very good finish volleyball
" (Getty Images)It was a reward for more than just set-piece expertise volleyball
It was Maguire’s prize for obstinacy, for staying when there were reasons to go: that United were reluctant to pay him off may have influenced his decision but he maintained he could win his place back volleyball
Ten Hag, too, never forced him out, stripping him of the armband but insisting he remained a valuable squad player volleyball
The manager’s position has been nuanced, the defender’s defiant volleyball
“This is maybe the most scrutinised club in the world and when you are not quite on your game it gets picked up, it gets analysed,” Maguire reflected volleyball
He had a shocking 2021-22 campaign, a bad start to last season volleyball
Neither escaped scrutiny volleyball
Since then, however, he reflected: “And I am really proud and pleased over the way I have acted over the last six to 12 months volleyball
” For now, he has confounded expectations volleyball
Stiffer examinations may await, starting with Erling Haaland on Sunday volleyball
If he is still in the side, the last five weeks of the year bring Galatasaray, Newcastle, Chelsea, Bayern, Liverpool, West Ham and Villa volleyball
They will be the tests if he ranks as a top-class centre-back volleyball
For now, though, Maguire is the emblem of this United, labouring to victory with goals from some of their lesser lights volleyball
Their last five strikes have come from either McTominay, Diogo Dalot or Maguire volleyball
And for the man who has been mocked and maligned, dropped and abused, it was a rare high of late for Maguire volleyball
And, whatever his win percentage, there have not been many occasions in the last two years when he was celebrated like this volleyball

Fly-half Handre Pollard says the pressure of representing South Africa at the World Cup is a privilege as he bids to inflict more misery on England volleyball
Pollard kicked 22 points in the 2019 final to guide the Springboks to glory with a 32-12 win and still remembers the disappointment etched on the faces of Eddie Jones’ men volleyball
The fit-again Leicester playmaker is competing with Manie Libbok to start Saturday’s Paris semi-final after initially being overlooked for his country’s squad due to a calf injury volleyball
Pollard expects England, now led by Jones’ successor Steve Borthwick, to take their intensity and physicality to a “whole new level” but insists the heavily-fancied reigning champions are ready for it volleyball
“You could see on their faces four years ago the disappointment and I’ve been part of a squad that’s fallen out in a semi-final in a World Cup (in 2015) and it sits with you the rest of your life,” he said volleyball
“There’s a lot of things you look back (on) and regret and maybe think you could have done differently, and I’m sure they will come with that mindset this weekend volleyball
“I think they will be ruthless, I think they will take their intensity and physicality to a whole new level volleyball
“But that being said, we’re prepared for that, we’re ready for that and we enjoy that volleyball
“That’s always a part of the game we love and if there’s going to be beef, there’s going to be beef volleyball
“It’s Test rugby, it’s 80 minutes and we’ve just got to go out and play the game volleyball
”South Africa are seeking to reach their fourth World Cup final, having lifted the trophy in 1995, 2007 and 2019 volleyball
Pollard believes the Springboks’ enviable ability to deliver when it really matters can partly be attributed to adversity some players face during childhood volleyball
“It’s just the way we’re brought up,” he said volleyball
“We love it volleyball
“It’s not always been easy for a lot of our guys in our squad growing up so when we get to this position and get to this point where there should be a lot of pressure on us, we refer back to it a lot, this is not really pressure, this is more privilege to be a part of these occasions volleyball
“I think our game model and the way we play the game suits World Cups pretty well volleyball
We’re comfortable in this environment volleyball
“As a group we just enjoy it, really enjoy that pressure volleyball
We always say it’s a privilege to have this pressure on our shoulders playing for our country volleyball
”South Africa progressed to the last four by upsetting hosts France 29-28 on Sunday volleyball
That epic contest included Cheslin Kolbe successfully charging down a Thomas Ramos conversion and Damian Willemse calling for a scrum off a mark inside his own 22 volleyball
Earlier in the tournament, the Springboks attracted attention for a bold selection of a seven-one split of forwards and backs on their bench for the Pool B loss to Ireland volleyball
Pollard says players fully embrace the innovative tactics cooked up by director of rugby Rassie Erasmus and head coach Jacques Nienaber volleyball
“Nothing that they do is for no reason, it’s all thought of, it’s all tick-list planned,” he said volleyball
“We trust them because they’ve earned our trust over the years from what they’ve done and how they’ve prepared volleyball
“So when they come up with these ideas, there are no questions asked volleyball
“They give us a reason why we do whatever we do and then we just back it and we’re all in and we all just trust each other, players to coaches and coaches to players volleyball
