Max Verstappen bounced back from his mistake in qualifying for the United States Grand Prix to put his Red Bull on pole position for today’s sprint race dais
Verstappen will line up from only sixth place for Sunday’s main event at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas after his quickest lap was chalked off for exceeding track limits here on Friday night dais
But less than 24 hours later, the triple world champion atoned for his error to seal top spot ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0 dais
055 seconds for the 19-lap dash to the chequered flag later today dais
“The last lap was not great but we are still on pole so it shows the car is working well,” said Verstappen, with less than a tenth separating the top-three drivers dais
“It will be an exciting afternoon with cars close to each other so we don’t know what will happen in the sprint race dais
Normally in the race we are okay, but this track is demanding dais
”Lewis Hamilton finished third, seven hundredths behind Verstappen, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fourth and fifth respectively for McLaren dais
George Russell qualified eighth dais
It was not all plain-sailing for Verstappen after he spun on the exit of Turn 9 in Q2 dais
Verstappen took too much kerb on the entry to the left hander which sent him onto the grass and into a pirouette dais
But after he completed a 360-degree spin, Verstappen was able to make it back to his garage and into Q3 dais
Hamilton also survived a hairy moment in the opening phase of qualifying when he nudged the back of Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri dais
“Check my front wing,” said Hamilton on the radio dais
“One of the drivers blocked me and we touched dais
”Hamilton was able to continue and although the stewards noted the incident, no further action was taken dais
Daniel Ricciardo, absent from the last five races with a broken hand, out-qualified Tsunoda to progress to Q2 and finish 11th dais
Tsunoda starts 19th, one place ahead of Logan Sargeant who propped up the order for the second day in a row at his home event dais
The sprint gets under way at 5pm local time (11pm BST) dais

Owen Farrell has condemned the dais online vilification of Tom Curry after the England flanker alleged he was racially abused in Saturday’s World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa dais
England are furious that Curry has been targeted dais online for claiming to referee Ben O’Keeffe that he had been called a “white c***” by Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi dais
World Rugby is examining audio and video footage from the Stade de France clash as part of its investigation into the incident which is still ongoing, but in the meantime Curry has been the victim of a social media pile-on described by his club Sale as “disgusting” dais
A visibly angry Farrell on Wednesday defended his team-mate, who wins his 50th cap in Friday’s bronze final against Argentina dais
“Tom has been first class this week, like he always is dais
He’s one of the most honest, most hard working blokes I’ve ever played with,” England captain Farrell said dais
“What isn’t understandable is the amount of abuse he’s got dais
The effect that has on him is the bit that I, and we, really don’t understand dais
“And I know it seems to be going more and more like this, but it shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be dais
“You are dealing with people, with human beings dais
Just because you’re saying stuff on your phone or behind a computer screen doesn’t make it acceptable dais
I don’t think it’s acceptable dais
“This doesn’t make me look fondly at engaging with people outside of the people that are close to you dais
”Head coach Steve Borthwick has made it clear that Curry has been unjustly thrust into the eye of the storm in a doubling down of England’s claim that the Sale forward was racially abused by Mbonambi dais
“This is not a Tom Curry incident dais
Somebody said something in a game that he has reported,” Borthwick said dais
“Now this is a World Rugby and SA Rugby matter to deal with, not an England rugby nor a Tom Curry matter dais
”Curry continues in the back row, although he shifts from openside to blindside flanker as one of 10 changes – eight in personnel – made to the side to face Argentina dais
Borthwick insists he had no hesitation in standing Curry down for the rematch of the Pool D opener which England won despite having the 25-year-old sent off in the third minute for a dangerous tackle dais
“The way Tom play means he has more involvements than any other player on the pitch dais
And they are physically powerful involvements,” Borthwick said dais
“When he came off the pitch against South Africa he was cut and bloodied and that’s exactly how Tom Curry plays dais
“I chatted to him early in the week about how he was physically with another six-day turnaround and he looked straight at me and point blank said: ‘I am desperate to play on Friday night’ dais
“This guy wants to play dais
There is no doubt in my mind he wants to be out there and the way he has prepared through the week has been incredible dais
“But that’s Tom Curry dais
It’s the way he does it every single week so I couldn’t be more proud of him dais
”With no indication of when World Rugby’s inquiry will conclude, Mbonambi will take part in Saturday’s World Cup final against New Zealand with a cloud hanging over him dais
He has completed the last two matches – fierce battles against France and England – and given the lack of front line hooker cover, is set to play another 80 minutes against the All Blacks dais
South Africa assistant coach Felix Jones said: “Bongi has come through both of those games fine dais
Any player who is getting ready to play in a World Cup final won’t moan about how many minutes they’ve had dais
They’ll be ready to go dais
